Tyson Foods to add 60 jobs in its Council Bluffs pork plant

Tyson Foods announced plans to hire 60 additional workers for its case ready beef and pork plant in Council Bluffs, Iowa. This is a result of the company’s expanded production for pork chops and roasts sold to retail grocers.

The Springdale-based meat giant said hiring will begin immediately. The plant employs about 1,100 people and has been in operation by Tyson Foods since 2001.

This line expansion comes on the heels of Tyson’s shuttering a beef slaughter facility located in Denison, Iowa resulting in the loss of 400 jobs last month.

Tight cattle supplies along with excess production capacity have made it difficult for Tyson Foods and other beef packers to secure the cattle at prices conducive to desired operating margins.

Tyson and other beef packers have pulled back on production in beef plants, but say that pork and chicken demand and supplies remain adequate.
